Diesel injectors are a very important part of diesel engines. They started life as a simple single spring injector and slowly got more complicated. After the single spring injector came the dual spring injector to reduce engine noise. I always wondered, if some efficiency was lost to make the engine quieter. To enable the ECU to read engine timing, a magnetic lift sensor was added. To meet more stringent emissions standards, high pressure common rail injection came along with very precise solenoids. Pressures kept on going higher and higher. The next iteration added piezo solenoids to enable more pulses and injection cycles. There are pre-injection pulses for niose reduction and post injection to burn cleaner.
Injectors can fail in many ways. Common rail injectors can slowly start backflowing, which means leaking fuel back to the tank. The internal valve can also completely fail cutting off high pressure to all of the injectors at the same time, which kills the engine. Injectors can also start to put out either too much or too little fuel resulting in a rough running engine.
