The Bosch VE pump is now more than 50 years old. This is one invention that I have a tremendous amount of respect for. It is a fully mechanical device to control both the quantity and timing of diesel fuel injection into the engine. There was a built in governor that balanced against springs for a smooth idle and max RPM. There was also an injection timing advance function linked to engine speed using internal pump pressure. This was an awesome device in its day and has proven itself to be very durable.

It was manufactured and installed into engines for more than 50 years. The only reason to discontinue production was increased emission standards that required computerized controls. The Bosch VE pump design was so good that it was licensed by the Japanese company Denso for production in Japan. It wasn't worth their while to make their own design. Most of those parts are interchangeable with the Bosch parts.

So it was manufactured on at least two continents and installed in cars on six continents and in many, many different engines built in the USA, Europe and Asia.

When the need for more precise injection control came along, the Bosch VE pump was converted to an electronic throttle and a timing solenoid was added. This was called the VP37 or VE-EDC pumps.

As the need for higher and higher pressures came into being, the Bosch VE pump was phased out and replaced by the current technology of common rail diesel injection. I miss the days when all you needed was 12v to turn the pump on and off and a throttle cable to control the throtle. There were no electronics needed. Some of the pumps could run without the start/stop solenoid and were turned off with a kill switch. No one seems to miss that simplicity.
